Android – How to save apps on sdcard by default

Type the following command
“adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2″

To switch back to storing software on the internal memory, enter “adb shell pm setInstallLocation 0″

Nice tip and works on my samsung galaxy 551 android 2.2

finished reading moth smoke few days back. although i did not like the book much and felt that the time spent (to & fro bus journey from my hometown to workplace) could have been better spent reading something else, nevertheless mohsin hamid is a very good writer and his style of writing is also very interesting. I also read his reluctant fundamentalist around 2 years back and it was a nice read. The story of moth smoke was bit darker and these days I am so black and blue that I do not need to read any more dark stories.
Well, here are few of the interesting, amusing excerpts from moth smoke, by mohsin hamid, a pakistani writer.

My father liked to wonder aloud whether the phoenix was recreated by the fire of its funeral pyre or transformed so that what emerged was a soulless shadow of its former being, identical in appearance but without the joy in life its predecessor had had.
He wondered alternatively whether the fire might be purificatory, a redemptive, rejuvenating blaze that destroyed the whithered shell of the old phoenix and allowed the creature’s essence to emrge stronger than it was before in a young, new body. Or, he would ask, was the fire a manifestation of entropy, slowly sapping the life energy of the phoenix over the eons, a little death in a life that could know no beginning and no end but which could nonetheless be subject to an ever decreasing magnitude? He asked me once if I thought the fires in our lives, the traumas, increased over fulfillment by setting up conmtrasts that illuminated more clearly our everyday joys; or perhaps I viewed them instead as tests that made us stronger by teaching us to endure; or did I believe, rather, that they simply amplified what we already were, in the end making the strong stronger, the weak weaker, and the dangerous deadly. I have thing about friends and secrets. Sometimes when I meet a person I like, I tell them a secret they don’t know me well enough to be told. It lets me judge their potential as a friend. But let me tell you what I think about secrets before you decide if you want me to tell you one. Secrets make life more interesting. You can be in a crowded room with someone and touch them without touching, just with a look, because they know a part of you no one else knows. I must most respectfully take issue with you on this matter, and I beg your indulgence as I present a simple proof.
Fat is a small word which belies its size in the girth of its coonotations. Fat implies a certain ungainliness, an inefficiency, a snse of immobility, a lack of industry, an unpleasant, unaesthetic quality; unomticated, unloved, unnatural, unusual, uninspired, unhappy, unlikely to go places or to fit, under the ground with a heart attack at fifty-five. In short, fat somewhat paradoxically involves the lack of many attributes which, you must concede, are generally held to be good.
when the word fat is mentioned, people do not tend to think of the awesomely powerful rhinoceros, the supremely efficient and magnificent sperm whale, the deadly grizzly of North America. They do not say “fat as a well-fed tiger”. No, they say, “fat as a apig”, a creature which eats its own feces and has never been in our literature a symbol of dignity.
Very well, then. The collective consciousness has assigned to fat a meaning, and as I speak this language I must accept fat on these terms. Fat is bad.
And so I am certain you will not disagree when I say the word can hardly be considered to apply to me. I am weight, yes, but I carry my mass wonderfully. I am quick, light on my feet, and graceful. I have poise; delicacy and elegance characterize my every movement. My fingers are nimble, my hands deft. It is no secret that I dance well and most willingly. Furthermore, I possess those very qualities the lack of whihc is assumed by the word “fat”: industry, drive, dexterity, cunning. I am the living embodiment of so many unfat qualities that their enumeration would be a project of enormous scope.
If A has fundamental characteristics the very absence of which characterize B, it cannot be said with any degree of accuracy (or, may I add, sophistication) that A is B.
Thus, I am not fat. Quod erat demonstrandum.

- Maybe I should have suspected it. there were enough hints. But hindsight is twenty-twenty, and besides, I trusted him.

random writing

well, things are going just okey-dokey. One day I observed that I am slowly and slowly disliking every single person in my office right from the guard to accountant, hr people, my team, my manager and sometimes even myself. frustration was building up slowly. with the job market promising, i decided to look for new job. after 3 months of disappointing searching, i finally managed to pass through one of the ivs. have resigned from my current co. and will be joining new co in approx 4 weeks. resignation fell on wed, 25th aug, 2010. let’s see what the future brings.
working on many different apps. lot of ideas floating but either they are very bad or a mismatch between my skill set and required skill set for those apps… let’s c.
finally, my cave has got mobile, laptop and internet for past 3 months, finally ending the 3 year long self imposed digital device ban, so should become more regular with random writing stuff.

Disable inbuilt camera

with advent of internet virus and their reincarnation into ‘embedded’ mobile version, this world is becoming more unsafe with each passing day, at least that’s how it appears to me from inside my cave
well, i am working on an application that will start every time you boot up your computer and I can remotely (thorugh another computer, through LAN or internet) access your computer’s webcam. The application provides the option to preview and save the feed coming from another camera.
The application is easy to build but I do not have much knowledge about network part. oh, lost the tarck.
well, the purpose of this post is to safeguard you from such rogue applications

On Ubuntu (tested on latest version, lucid lynx, 10.04), first find out which driver is being used by your camera
1. Go to terminal.
2. type lsmod | grep videodev
you’ll get output something like this:
videodev 40486 1 uvcvideo
v4l1_compat 15495 2 uvcvideo,videodev
v4l2_compat_ioctl32 12020 1 videodev

the line starting with videodev names the video driver name, in this case uvcvideo

3. unload the driver by typing:
sudo modprobe -r uvcvideo

-r is for removing. After executing this command, no application can use your camera.
If you want to use webcam, you can type sudo modprobe uvcvideo [same line without -r]
this will enable the driver again. ONce you are finished using it, unload the driver again.

NOTE: Whenever you reboot the computer, the camera driver will be automatically reloaded. If you want to disable auto-reload, type the following lines:
cd /etc/modprobe.d
sudo gedit blacklist.conf

blacklist.conf will open. Add the following lines at the end (without quotes)
“
#disable auto-reload of camera on reboot
blacklist uvcvideo
“

save and quit.
Now your camera will always be in disabled mode unless you explicitly enable it by typing in “sudo modprobe uvcvideo”.
Once your camera is anable, any application can use it but once you disable it, no application can use it.

ON WINDOWS, the things are much simpler::

just go to CONTROL PANEL -> device manager -> imaging devices. you should see the webcam listed. right click on it and click disable. you will need to restart windows. now no application can access your webcam until and unless you enable it back through device manager.
