I wish I had stayed longer

I wish I had stayed longer here. I wish I had done more, seen more places, written more, read more, eaten less (:p), slept less, played less games etc. But it’s always the same for me. eating and sleeping and i stay happy or to say in words, life happens with you somewhere before you realize and you are sucked into their activities for which you had no plans, which you never just thought about and which you feel was never cool. It happens. Life happens.

Anyway, list of some of the places I visited in korea – not many places but after going to these places, I got the idea what to expect from other places. Some places were quite interesting, other amazing and some other fascinating; I had good time at all places and with all, well almost ~ almost all,  people. 🙂

1. Lotte world – termed as the world’s largest indoor amusement park. The architect of this park must have received instructions to create something akin to fortresses in disney animation movies. If you see it from a distance, you cant believe it is real. It just looks so beautiful. Inside, there are some very thrilling rides – similar to what most amusement parks have but only more technologically superior which will provide you with very unique experience. Do visit this place if you want to taste your heart and for that matter, lings, kidneys and everything else. Cause when you will thrown from  aheight of 100 feet (gyro drop ???) or when gyro swing will lock you in a small box and move you sideways, you will feel as if king kong has come to the earth. 35K Won for one day for an adult and yes, dont forget to take care of your ticket. some rides shake you so violently that anything in your pocket will fall out and once you lose your ticket, you can come back home and sleep. not bad? To reach here, use Line 2/8 and get down at Jamsil Station.

2. Caribbean bay – If you feel, Lotte world was too much hassle or if you like me do not like scary rides, then caribbean bay is a great place. Here you can just jump in and out of water in your underwear and have a good time without a care in the world. Only one ride is scary and that too nothing compared to rides in Lotte world. rest all of them are quite relaxing. Again, similar to most other water parks, only bigger and better and far superior.  Cost = 40,000 W for one day. Foreigners can avail discount by taking printout of discount coupon available on their website. To reach here, I took cab and bus 66-3 (not sure; forgot)

3. Changdeokgung palace – considered as UNESCO world heritage site[which means … ;)], it’s architecture style and open spaces will impress you. I went there in search of secret… secret garden of biwon (beewon) which is a small part of this palace. Guides are usually available and walking through the maze of jungles and buildings with a group of 100 or more people was quite good. One of the must visit palaces. Use Line 1/3/5 – Jongno 3 ga station or Line 3 Anguk Station.

4. Namyeong Market – The variety, price  and quality of clothes here will just amaze you. Almost all kinds of clothes you can buy here and at very good price. To reach Namyeong Market, get down at Hoehyeon station ( first station on line 4 after seoul station). The first place to go in korea for shopping clothes.

5. Dongdaemun Market – It’s similar to namyeong but for shoes and leather goods. You can also buy clothes here but still namdaemun has lots and lots of variety compared to this place. Again, all products at prices you won’t believe. To reach dongdaemun station, stay on line 1 ( it’s around 5-6 stations from seoul station)

6. Itaewon – If the lack of foreigners or english speaking people in korea has disappointed you, then you have not visited Itaewon. Here there are many good places to eat, all kinds of restaurants and bars. I found three Indian restaurants in a row in Itaewon around Hamilton hotel (Hamilton hotel is in front of Itaewon station). It’s a good place to buy jewellery, ornaments. Also, most people will tell you prices in dollars, so if you want to buy in dollars without getting into the headache of money exchanges, then it’s a good places. A third must visit places for shopping and eating out. You will find many foreigners, americans, canadians and australians and few russians, indians in bars and restaurants. Use Line 6 to reach Itaewon.

7. Yongsan Station Market and technomart – These two places are considered best for buying electronics goods – computer related or cameras, iphones, ipod touch etc. I bought 3 cameras (ok.. 2 cameras and 1 camcorder – Cannon SX20 for 500K Won, Samsung F34 for 450K and Samsung NV100 HD for 320K W). To reach Yongsan station, stay on line 1. it’s 4-5 stations before seoul. For cameras, there’s a big mall I’Park mall right next to station. It’s full of cameras but the prices are ok and all breeds of shopkeepers ranging from nice and genuine price ones to extremely greedy and rude ones. I bought one camera from Namdaemun market and there’s not much difference in price there but only 2 shops I saw in namdaemun. Yongsan has few other markets also. Just walk around. For buying computer goods, you have go through a bridge. Ask for  “Sunin plaza”. There’s a korean name for it also and also, dont expect to find Sunin plaza written anywhere on it… 🙂
Technomart is better place but it’s on line 2, Gangbyeon Station, 2 stations after Jamsil station. Technomart has all kinds of good but prices are more or less same to prices in yongsan. Not much difference. Sometimes Yongsan is a bit cheaper. It’s a must visit place to check out if you want to buy electronics items.

These are some of the places I really liked. Except that there are few other places around seoul like seoul tower[Line 3/4 chungmuro station; Line 3 – dongguk station], cheonggyecheon stream(nice with family.. just sit there with your feet in water and sun shining on your face. little kids come to catch fish in which they never succeed but learn the virtues of preseverance and patience and hardwork..) [Use Line 1 Jegi-Dong/ Line 2 – Yong-du office / dongdaemun-gu office, Seoul grand park zoo (Line 4, Seoul grand park), Children’s grand park (Line 5, Achasan Station / Line 7 Children’s grand park] etc

Places i missed

I felt like going to buddhist temple stay on a weekend for around 8 weeks but never really did so. may be some other time. I just felt little odd going there. No one likes discomfort. I am no different and I felt it will not be a very comfortable experience.

mountain climbing – it’s winter with temp around -8 C and sure it would be quite nice to go for trekking or rock climbing….. As shakespeare said, “Care I for the limb, the thews, the stature, bulk, and big assemblance of a man! Give me the spirit.”

For learning korean, I found one really good book – “Learn to speak korean”. It’s a small green cover book for 9K Won and I bought it from Itaewon… (just opposite to church nearest to itaewon station and in the same row as  hamilton hotel)

Besides that, I found it really very easy to  go to any place. The metro is very convenient and once you have the subway map, it’s all just too easy to visit any place you want. The bus stands are very good and orderly. Travelling is bit expensive but I bought a T-Money card which can be used in buses and metro and no need to buy tickets again and again. Just recharge it, pack you bags, take the subway map and you’re all set to go… wait where’s your adventure cap, your cool HUNDRED DOLLARS  goggles and your half-pants. yeah, wear them, take a good camera with you and have fun.

Happy Staying in korea. Yogi kyeshinun tongan mani chulgishigi paramnida (I hope you will enjoy your stay here) and as they say (Onje)  Tashi poepki paramnida… I hope to meet you again sometime. 🙂

Qamar Jalalabadi

“Ik dil ke tukde hazaar huye, koi yahan gira koi wahan gira. Bahte hue aansoo ruk na sake, koi yahan gira koi wahan gira” (One heart is broken into thousand pieces. Some have fallen here. Some have fallen there. Tears don’t stop. Some drop here. Some drop there). This was the outcome of his lament that “he kept losing people he cared for one by one and was forced into a final quagmire of loneliness as he weakly wrestled with the agonies of old age as well as a non-descript existence. There was no way to collect any of the remaining ‘tukde’ and join them since they had disintegrated completely and were too far apart”)

Why it must befall him, he begged the God.

– You are so goddamn spoiled! I will have to take measures to keep your senses up!

– And people are so influenced by the outer brightness that they no longer see the internal sunshine.

– Everybody was happy for him. But he was not. It was the cruelest irony. They seemed anything but humans to him. All their life they would run after achieving the worldly things. Degree, position, power, money, status. But no body cared to earn the essential. A thing without which everything else is futile. A thing without which vain is life.

Come on. Think. I want you to reach back into those minds and tell me, tell us all.. What is it that you fantasize about? World peace? thought so.. Do you fantasize abt international fame? Do you fantasize about winning a pulitzer prize? Or a Noble peace prize? An mtv music award. Do you fantasize about meeting some genius hunk, ostensibly bad.. but secretly simmering with noble passion and willing to sleep on the wet spot.

you get to the lacan’s point. fantasies have to be unrealistic because the moment, the second you get what you seek, you dont, you cant want it anymore. in order to continue to exist, desire must have its objects perpetually absent. it’s not the it that you want; it’s the fantasy of it. so desire supports crazy fantasies.

this is what pascal means when he says we are only truly happy when daydreaming about future happiness or why we say the hunt is sweeter than the kill or be careful what you wish for not because you’ll get it, because you are doomed not to want it once you do. so the lessons of lacan is living by your wants will never make you happy. what that mean is to fully human is to strive to live by ideas and ideals and not measure your life by what you’ve attained in terms of your desires but small moments of integrity, compassion, rationality even self-sacrifice. because in the end the only way we can measure the significance of our own lives is by valuing the lives of others.

We spend our whole lives trying to stop death. Eating, inventing, loving, praying, fighting, killing. But what do we really know about death? Just that nobody comes back. But there comes a point in life – a moment – when your mind outlives its desires, its obsessions, when your habits survive your dreams, and when your losses… Maybe death is a gift. You wonder. All I can tell you is that by this time tomorrow I’ll be dead. I know when. I just can’t say why. You have 24 hours to find out.

a doubt – dll vs lib

Our application was using older version of a third party library. I found the newer version and replaced the old dll with new dll but did not replace the older lib with newer lib and thus, did not recompile my code. I was under the impression that just replacing the dll will be sufficient as the basic purpose of dll is modularity and when we need to upgrade the code, we only need to update the dll and not recompile our whole code. Certainly, it was a misconception as I found that parts of my application dependant on third party library stopped working.

Here are some of my doubts –

> The lib contains code, and if that code is copied into exe, then why do we need a dll?
Is it that lib contains addresses only and no code i.e. function name or data name and it’s offset from the start address. i.e. this function starts 62 bytes from the top of dll but the actual function code inside the dll is used at runtime?
If it’s so, then if dll is updated in future, then we need to rebuild our application which goes against the primary rationale of using dll which is that any future updates will cause only one component to change and not the whole application.

my favorite and not-so-fav movies

I am a person of very simple taste and most of the movies I like have no violence or any supernatural characters. Well, that puts most of the action movies and suspense/horror movie out of the preview.

My favorite movies are either comedy movies of Jim carrey style or romantic classics or those about ordinary people trying to do extra-ordinary things. All ratings are based on how much happy I felt while watching it which depends also on my mood while watching it or how much I can relate that move to people around me and to my experience in am a person of very simple taste and most of the movies I like have no violence or any supernatural characters. Well, that puts most of the action movies and suspense/horror movie out of the preview.

My favorite movies are either comedy movies of Jim carrey style or romantic classics or those about ordinary people trying to do extra-ordinary things. Moreover, some of these movies I watched 3-5 years ago and all I carry is faint memory of them.

8 – excellent. 9 = extraordinary. 10 = miracle which happens once in 10 years or so.  7 = very good. 6 = no comments(neutral). 5 = average. 4=below average. 3 = dont watch it. 2 = sh*t. 1=what was that?

All JR’s and JC’s movies are rated after removing them from the movie otherwise all their movies are 10/10. My other hollywood favorites are tom hanks, russell crowe. In bolllywood, almost everyone with little bias towards salman khan, konkana sen, vinay pathak among the contemporaries.
